Throwback Thursday: Bastet and Corey Nina, Delilah and Boris Lacrimose and hiddenish lore of Oddity Witches
Only so much of the additional characters that aren't Mouse's friends in Mouse the Witching Cat have any actual information worth knowing about them. But, if one is so inclined, there is lore and personality for these characters. You know the names of Mouse's aunt and uncle already from the book - named after the Egyptian goddess Bastet and famous martyr of the Salem Witch trials Giles Corey, respectively.
They may seem like a pair of bullies since they mock Mouse for his witch-ambitions, but keep in mind that they're mostly pretty happy being witch cats themselves. Like a lot of older family members, they don't see their unwanted pep-talks as anything more than stern advice for their niece. Bastet is strict and very serious, but still smiley, for a witching cat, while her husband Corey is a little more scatterbugged. They love each other and nevertheless care deeply about their niece. Oh, and they can also turn into witches if given the chance (see below)
Speaking of witch...
The witches the cats belong to are seen only in shadow throughout Mouse the Witching Cat because they are meant to be otherwise mysterious. However if you remember her bio than you know Mouse's witch owners have names and yes - they are supposed to show up in the comics.
Their names are Nina, Delilah, and Boris Lacrimose. They're sisters!
I've loved designing and also redesigning them over the years and keeping them both reasonably witchy while also formal. Personality wise, you and I both need to know only this much:
Nina - Second eldest and impromptu leader of the Coven because she said so!! Like Bastet, she's a bit of a traditionalist witch and is all about "ugly" and "haggish" being a compliment and hating all things human and male and 'heathen' to witch kind.
Boris - Eldest. Boris, like Nina, doesn't tolerate nonsense. However, such nonsense also extends to her sister's bossy nature and high standards which she's usually pretty done with. Boris is a skilled potion-keeper and potion maker.
Delilah - Youngest. Despite being a grown witch she still wears her hair in pigtails. Delilah is the peppiest, more open-minded member of the coven. She's a gifted broomrider and is the only one of the sisters to have an idea of how human technology works.
This is their latest pass at colors and clothing style for future reference. I designed them with the idea that Mouse stands out as this saturated blot of color in a shot of grays, browns and blacks. And yes, they are all relatively young (witch) women. All witches and witching-cat turned witches (sans Mouse) look like 'haggish' elderly human women covered in warts. 'Pretty' witches are permitted, just not accepted and usually looked down upon by covens like the Lacrimosse sisters. Mouse's idea of what is and isn't supposed to be is pretty dictated by these standards
Witches natural witch magic is inherently light based. Dark magic can be used safely by them as it is at balance with their souls- hence why both their clothes and their cat's fur are all uniquely dignified, regal black. By contrast, their sister species of natural magicmakers, clowns, work in almost exclusive dark magic but use it for good and dress mostly in white.
Delilah, Nina and Boris can be seen in this years and lasts' Friday the 13th pics as cats. They and all the witch-turned-witching cats can be spotted by their lack of colored eyes - a trait witching cats keep well into their witch form, as Mouse has clearly demonstrated.
